Sycamore Valley

James M. Coulter / 2 Comments

I just started being more interested in "trees" as a focal point in my paintings. Before they were always used as a painting element, always less in importance than less say a mountain, or the ocean, etc. I have started looking at trees more as "characters" and some being more interesting than others. I have done this some before with the desert saguaro cactus. This particular area that I found this tree was done by the oak creek just north of Sedona. It was a very enchanted area among many of these very strong and imposing Sycamore trees. It reminded me of the California Impressionists with that kind of poetic color available. I have always that simplified spontaneous looser approach to the subject manner. Quite different than a more descriptive painting style that depicts more of an informational element that an emotional reaction. I think sometimes you can paint out all the feeling of a scene by being overly technical and specific.

I am so glad to find your blog because I am determined to do small landscape studies up at my NY state farm in the next few weeks and your work is lovely and inspiring.
